What are the gardens you refer to? You mean ancient garderns of Suzhou? Don't worry, they are all in the city center. And the west lake or other famous scean are all in the city center of Hangzhou.
So 2 days are enough for each city. Actually for Suzhou 1 day can be arranged for ancient garderns and 1~2 day for ancient town. I have heard that living in the ancient houses in the ancient town,esp. beside the small river, will be very special experience.
As I know, the train tickets can be pre-sold on a different city from the start city of the ticket, e.g. in Beijing you can buy the ticket from Shanghai to Hangzhou,also the adversary,in advance of 11 days at most. But for the convinience of foreigners, I think perhaps booking on the web is a better choice.
